Cardioversion: Restoring Your Heart’s Natural Rhythm
If you have an irregular heartbeat—such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter—a procedure called cardioversion may help restore your heart to a normal rhythm.
At Hawaii Heart Associates, our experienced cardiologists perform cardioversions in the hospital using two safe and effective methods:
Electrical cardioversion – A quick, controlled shock is delivered to the heart to reset its rhythm.
Medication (pharmacological) cardioversion – Special heart rhythm medications are used to help your heart return to normal.
These procedures are generally fast, well-tolerated, and done on an outpatient basis, meaning most patients go home the same day.
Before your cardioversion, we’ll carefully evaluate your condition, including performing a transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), to ensure the approach is safe and appropriate for you. After the procedure, we provide close monitoring and follow-up care to support lasting results and help reduce the chance of future rhythm problems.
If you've been diagnosed with an abnormal heart rhythm, cardioversion may be an important step in feeling better and protecting your heart health.
